2011: A YEAR OF TRANSITION – 25 Years and Beyond

We need your help! The financial assistance and program support FOCCUS provides to the five Chernobyl Community Centers (Centers) in Ukraine is more important than ever. These Centers, situated in areas still severely affected by the health and economic consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, are facing very challenging and uncertain times as Ukraine struggles to become a functioning democracy and deal with emerging political and economic problems. FOCCUS works hard to build relationships between Americans and the new Ukraine. We invite you to join us!

Primary funding for the Centers comes from the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Services and this funding is in jeopardy. The Centers also work closely with the UN Chernobyl Recovery and Development Program, which has now been phased out. The Centers and their communities need help more than ever as they plan for a new era.

In addition to our core grant support to the Centers in 2011, FOCCUS is working with all five Centers to organize a conference in conjuction with the 25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster in April 2011. This conference will bring together professional staff from each of the Centers to share their experiences and best practices with one another. The Centers will also use this opportunity to plan for the future of these Centers and explore ways they can more closely work together to build greater capacity to meet the needs of their communities.

In order to provide our much needed assistance to the Centers and help them chart their course for the future, FOCCUS needs $23,000 of additional funding. By supporting FOCCUS aid to the Centers, you can help ensure their survival.
